There are all kinds of things that couples can do together to build better and a healthy relationship. The truth is nearly any interest both parties have in common, or even when one follows the interest of the other, couples who do things together and share experiences have stronger relationships and last longer than those who don’t.

With divorce an all too common problem, and even couples who continue their marriages but seldom do things together but rather live separate lives, encouraging couples to build healthier relationships is one of the best things anyone can do. Once the kids are gone and retirement looms, couples only have each other.

Once activity they can do together that really helps strengthen a relationship is to start a couple’s blog. Of course, this will mean setting up and choosing a domain name, getting hosting, and at least a little website development.

Ways to maintain a healthy relationship

Once that is out of the way, usually done by the more tech savvy member of the partnership, it is time to let the relationship building begin.

Do it Together

If you have both had careers it is likely that you can also both write. If you are unfamiliar with blog and article writing, it is a skill that is easily learned, and can even be mastered over time. The key is to practice.

At first, explore writing articles together about things you are both interested in. You can even take opposite sides on an issue, and both present your cases. This can be humorous or even about more serious issues. The point is that you join forces in some kind of writing theme or plan.

A couple’s blog does not have to center just on home or parenting or even relationships. It can focus on travel, business, classic cars, and nearly any other subject you can think of that you both are interested in and can write about comfortably. Maybe you have several hobbies, and you can write about all of them, the ones you share and the ones you do individually.

Do it For Each Other

Like any other part of your relationship, there will be times when one of you is stronger than the other, more efficient in some way, or simply has more time. When this is the case, blog for each other. It is simply another way to show support for your partner.

At the same time, there are things you should say to your partner publicly if given the chance, and a blog might just be that chance. You may not want to get overly personal, but sharing your personal stories and feelings is okay in a blog setting, but you can still express love, caring, and the way you and your spouse show that to each other on your blog. This is an endeavor you have undertaken together, so be supportive just as you would in any other endeavor.

Yes, you will have an audience eventually, but the original reason you are starting the blog is for yourselves and to support each other. The fans you will build are a secondary consideration.

Share it With Others

Maybe you are new to the couple’s thing or maybe you are experienced. Maybe one or both of you has had other marriages or relationships you have learned from. The point is this: you have experiences and a unique perspective on a number of topics, and that knowledge and the things you have learned will benefit others.

A blog has a lot more reach than a group in your house or something at the church or YMCA. The platform you have with your own domain and website allows you to share with the world and share on a wider variety of ideas. Other groups might be limited in focus or the perspective they come from.

The way you will share your blog with others will probably be in large part through social media and perhaps building an email list. Social media is the new word of mouth, and the bigger the relevant following you have, the more likely you are to get your message across. While your friends and family are a good resource, no one knows enough people to share a blog wide enough to build a substantial audience. They need others to do it for them, and social media is where you find those others.

Build a Community

By sharing, you will start to build a community. Be sure that you have setup an email and blog subscriber list. This will help you keep those who have found your blog interested and will help you remind them that you are still around.

The wider you build a community, the larger audience you will have. The larger your audience, the more people you can share with, the more impact your blog will have. This community will begin to grow organically as well, as those community members share with their friends, and so on.

The community aspect of blogging is one of its more rewarding draws, for more than one reason.

Make a Little Money

Do you have a substantial blog following now? If you want to make a little extra money on the side? Well, there are a number of clever ways for you to do so.

  • Native Ads: These ads, from companies like Google, Amazon, and even Outbrain show your readers ads relevant to your page or to their recent searches. You get paid whenever someone clicks on that ad.
  • Affiliate Links: These are links to a product or service, and you get paid when someone makes a purchase from those links. Be sure to let your readers know if you include affiliate links in an article.
  • Sponsored Posts: SEO agencies and marketers will often pay you to place a relevant post about their product or service on your site. Be sure you distinguish this from the regular content on your site.
  • Site Sponsors: Let’s say you are a couple who enjoys cycling. Your site could be sponsored by a bike company, an apparel company, or someone who makes bike accessories. This can be a steady source of income once you have enough web traffic.

Blogging can be a great way to take your relationship from good to fantastic, from blah to healthy. You can even make some money on the side and make your budget healthy as well. Start by doing it for yourselves and for each other and doing it together and the rest will follow.
