What is Tonsillitis?

Enlarged tonsils is a very common problem all over the world. The chances of incidence of Enlarged tonsils are higher in children as compared to adults. In some individuals, this problem occurs only once in a lifetime whereas in others it can occur frequently. Tonsils are present at the back of the throat. They function as filters and traps harmful pathogens so that they cannot enter in our airways and result in infection.

They can also generate antibodies to protect our body from infection. But at times tonsils can get infected too, if there is presence of large number of harmful bacteria or viruses. When tonsils get infected, they swell and become reddened. This condition is called Tonsillitis.

What are the common causes of Tonsillitis?

Bacteria or viruses are responsible for the Tonsillitis problem. In majority of the cases, Streptococcus bacteria is responsible for this. The other causes of Tonsillitis are given below: –

The main signs of Tonsillitis are inflammation and reddening of the tonsillitis. In some cases, the inflammation can block the airways making it difficult to breathe. Other signs of Tonsillitis are given below: –

In both the tests, the back of the throat is swabbed with a cotton to detect the causing organism to check the kind of infection.

In case of bacterial infection, antibiotics are given to treat the infection. Antibiotics ca be taken either via injection or oral route. The indications of Tonsillitis start improving in 2-3 days after taking the medicine. But it is very important for a person to complete the course of medicine so that all the bacteria are gone.

It is important to treat Tonsillitis at right time using right medications. In case of delay in treatment, the situation may become worse.
