Most of you will be surprised to know this. But it is true! It may appear to be a striking deviation from what we have heard so far about healthy lifestyle, but there is a connection between health and gratitude which cannot be ignored.

When was the last time you said ‘thank you’ to someone?

Benefits of being Grateful

Gratitude to stay healthy

There are multitudes of health benefits that being grateful can give you. So why not make it a daily practice. Let me tell you some of the benefits of being thankful:

  • Good for mental health
  • Ability to cope up with stress
  • Greater immune system
  • Gives the feeling of optimism
  • Improves well-being
  • For students, its coupled with higher grades
  • Makes you a better friend – you tend to help people in problems, both physically and emotionally
  • If you make a list of things you are grateful of daily before bedtime, it gives you a better sleep.
  • Being thankful for even the small things your lover or partner does for you strengthens your relationship.
  • It keeps you away from the negative emotions

What are the 3 Levels of Gratitude?

Gratitude to stay healthy

Level 1 is the stage which all of us have experienced in our lives. What we often do is that we pass off this feeling of gratitude as a fleeting moment. Infact we should make ‘the attitude of gratitude’ a constant process. Cultivate attitude and activate its health benefits – the best start for anyone.

Level 2 is somewhat challenging. Many people find it difficult to open up and go and say thank you to someone. They feel that if I express my appreciation, I will be more vulnerable. But this is not the right approach. Expressing gratitude forms an emotional bond – a bond which will make you happy and never let you feel alone.

Move out of your shell!

Level 3 is the most influential level. It can bring about a great change in your future. People who are more grateful have a positive outlook in life, which keeps them stress-free and thus gives mental satisfaction.  They are aware of the positivities of life and tend to focus their attention outside of themselves. According to Emmons, a psychology professor at the University of California at Davis, “gratitude is defined by your attitude towards both the outside world and yourself”.

What are the ways to cultivate gratitude?

Gratitude is the way to be thankful for what you have and not trying to reach out for something in the hope that it will make me happier. Focus on what you have rather than what is lacking. It may appear difficult in the beginning but it becomes stronger with time. Look at these ways to cultivate gratitude in your daily life:

A thank-you note can do wonders

Gratitude to stay healthy

Make yourself happy and cherish the relationship you share. Write a ‘thank you’ note to express the importance and the positive impact of that person in your life.

Don’t forget to write one for yourself at times!

Be grateful mentally

Too busy with your schedules to write? No problem!

Just think about the person you are thankful to and thank him or her mentally. It will give you a lot of mental satisfaction.

Keep a record of your blessings

Gratitude to stay healthy

Take some time out of your hectic schedule and jot down things that made you happy and you are appreciative of.

Be grateful, Be Happy and Stay Healthy!

      Hi Joan

Am glad that you liked the post.

We all should be grateful of things we have in life. Appreciation can really make a person happy!

  • Hi Sonal

This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart. Gratitude has become my lifestyle and practicing it daily happens without me even having to think about it.

I love the way you presented gratitude in the 3 different levels – it is the best thing that anyone can do and that is to be thankful for what you already have. So many benefits that can be derived from that stage.

I am most grateful for my life, family and friends. Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend.

      Hi Yvonne

      Thanks for your wonderful feedback!

Gratitude is close to my heart as well. Being grateful brings about a transformation in our personality. It changed me completely as I started looking at the positive side of things.

Even am grateful to God for my wonderful family and friends.

      Have a great weekend!

  • I love your idea of writing down what you are grateful for. This is something I regularly do–I write things down and collect them all in a pretty jar. At the beginning of each new year, I read all of them over, and reflect upon what the previous year brought me. It helps me look forward to the new year with delight and excitement, rather than any anxiety over the troubles I’ve had.

    Thanks for your lovely post.

    Blessings!

      Hi Chanler

      Thanks for stopping by!

I can relate to this. Even I have the habit of writing down things am grateful for in my diary. Whenever I feel low and think about what is lacking in my life…I just open the diary and read it. it makes me feel very relaxed. I feel that there are so many good things that I have. This makes me feel positive again.

      Have a great weekend!

      Hi Erika Mam

Lovely quote! I totally agree with it.

We should be grateful of what we have instead of being proud. Feeling of gratitude will keep us happy and healthy.

      Have a great day!

      Hi Vashishtha

      Thanks for stopping by!

Yes being grateful gives you a great mental satisfaction. It gives you peace of mind. Count your blessings and never shy away from saying thank you to people who have helped you.

      Have a nice day!

  • Excellent article Sonal. My faith teaches gratitude, mercy and grace. I try to practice this daily. I used to keep a spiritual journal where I wrote down every thing I prayed for and as my prayers were answered, I would record it. It was a great help during trying times because I could reflect on how blessed I had been. I got away from my spiritual journal but your article has reminded me of how important it was to my spiritual and emotional well-being. Great article.

It was really a good practice that you were engaged in. Am glad to hear that you will start it again. I myself keep a diary of things that am grateful for in my life and of people who have helped me. It is a source of mental peace.

Hope you will continue with your journal.

      Have a nice day!

      Hi Brenda

      Thanks for the feedback.
It is healthy to practice gratitude and it is something we should never be tired of. We should always be thankful to God and people around for what they have done for us.

      Have a nice day!

  • Hi Sonal,

It is my first time here, and I really love your blog. The simplicity with which you pass your message is wonderful.

Gratitude is a topic I can never get tired of talking about, because like your topic says, it is really magical.

“Many people find it difficult to open up and go and say thank you to someone. They feel that if I express my appreciation, I will be more vulnerable.” I am grateful I am not part of those people. I am a Nigerian, and culturally we express gratitude a lot. There is a tribe in my country -Yoruba- that is known for gratitude. Personally my attitude of gratitude went up a lot higher after working and living with them.

personally I have a ‘Counting My Blessings’ note pasted in my bedroom. There I made a list of about 60 things for which I am grateful. I try to remind myself that no matter how bad things may seem at any momenet, I have a whole lot of things for which I am grateful. This affects my attitude a lot.

This is a great reminder, and I can’t wait to share.

      Hi Toby

First of all thanks for visiting my blog. Am very glad that you liked my posts.

Coming to gratitude, yes it is magical. It gives us mental peace and satisfaction. It is great that you are not into that category of people who are never grateful. I must say, a great culture you have. Great to know about such community like Yoruba. People in the world should learn from this community.

The way you have a note posted, I maintain a diary to count my blessings.

Thanks for the wonderful feedback and sharing.

      Have a nice day!

  • Hi Sonal,

Being grateful and getting to have it part of your life is the most wonderful way to live. It starts with our mindset, and then we act upon it.

When we reach level 3 as you mentioned, our lives become more peaceful. We see things more clearly and realize we are blessed with just about everything and everyone around us.
