Mother’s Day 2016: Express your Love

Mother’s Day 2016: Express your Love
Like Tweet Pin it Share Share Email

Mother’s Day is celebrated all over the world to respect all mothers and express thankfulness for all the hardships they bear.

There is a beautiful poem by Howard Johnson that comes to my mind when I think of my mother:

M” is for the million things she gave me,
O” means only that she’s growing old,
T” is for the tears she shed to save me,
H” is for her heart of purest gold;
E” is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
R” means right, and right she’ll always be,
Put them all together, they spell
MOTHER,”
A word that means the world to me.

When is Mother’s Day?

Many countries including US, Australia, Canada and India celebrate Mothers Day on the second Sunday of May. So this year Mother’s Day falls on 8th May 2016.

The Day came into being by the efforts of Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis. The Resolution to have a Day dedicated to all the mothers was signed by US President Woodrow Wilson on May 8, 1914. Since then people all over the world celebrate the Day with joy and affection.

History of Mother’s Day

The origin of Mothers Day goes back to the ancient annual spring festival of the Greeks. The Greeks dedicated the day to honor Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology.

Ancient Romans also celebrated a spring festival which was called Hilaria, dedicated to Cybele, a mother goddess. The Romans made offerings in the temple of Cybele which lasted for three days. The celebrations included parades, games, and masquerades.

The early Christians also celebrated a Mother’s Day on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honour of Virgin Mary, the Mother of Christ.

History of Mother's Day

The recent history of Mother’s Day dates back to 1600s in England. To honour mothers, the Mothering Sunday is celebrated every year on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Children give gifts and flowers as a mark of respect to their mothers.

Today Mother’s Day is celebrated in almost all the countries across the globe. People take the day as an opportunity to acknowledge their mothers for their love and support.

My family was saying that Mothers Day is celebrated around the world, and I see from your article that this is true. My son came for the weekend and we went out for brunch with my husband and his girl friend today. This is all the Mother’s Day gift I wanted. He lives in Montreal so a visit was a wonderful gift. Happy Mother’s Day to you in India.

  • Hi Sonal,

Just when I thought Mother’s day was celebrated for retail purposes, I find the history of it right here. What a relief! I love the way you have given us all the different variations of where Mother’s were celebrated.

Guess I was so caught up in the commercial aspect of it, I started to ignore it all. Now I see the true meaning and purpose.

    Thanks so much,

      Hi Donna

Its true that earlier some of these days were celebrated only for the commercial purposes. But now things have changed. People have started believing in the importance of such special days.

Glad that you liked the post.

      Hope you enjoyed the day!

  • Hi Sonal,

What a lovely post. I’m in the UK, so I’ve already had my Mother’s Day. The gift from my son, apart from some lovely flowers and a card, was the most precious thing of all – his time. He spent the day fixing up some jobs round the house for me, in between chatting and having a meal together.

Sadly this was my second Mother’s Day without my own dear Mum and the void she left grows deeper with every day. All those lovely sayings are true (for my Mum anyway) – so for those of you lucky enough to still have your Mums with you, cherish them while you can.

Vow you must have had a great day. Its true that apart from gifts what really matters is the time of the loved ones. I also spent the entire day with my mother and gave her a break from all the work and made her relax.

      Hope you enjoyed the day!

  • Very nice post ,Sonal
All these beautiful quotes and great gift Ideas .
You did a good work with this for the celebration of
Mothers day. Nice to see all these countries celebrating
the day of the mother in a new way. In India was in ancient
time the mothers day Mata Tirtha Aunshi celebrated
in the Baisakh month , but different than it is celebrated today.
But still the Mothers days are all celebrated around the month of May.
I like this quote :“Mother love is the fuel that enables a normal human being to do the impossible.”
