New Year’s Eve is around the corner. The year 2015 is about to end and we will enter the New Year 2016.  Everyone will ask you the same question that what is your New Year resolution for 2016?

what is your New Year resolutions

Many of us will make New Year’s resolutions like my resolution this year is to lose weight or I will quit smoking or I make a resolution to stay fit etc etc. But how many of you really achieve your goal?

We all know that it is not easy to keep up the resolutions.

As life becomes normal after the holiday season and New Year celebrations, our old habits tests our new resolutions and tend to pull us away from them. Change is not easy but we all have the ability to bring about changes and make our life meaningful.

So how do I achieve my resolution? Here are some strategies that will help you make your New Year Resolutions in 2016 effective:

Strategies to make New Year Resolutions effective in 2016:

New Year Resolutions

1.  Know Why

If you want to stick to your resolution, you should know why you are making this resolution and you should be passionate about achieving it. Make resolutions that give you a sense of purpose. If your resolution is linked to a purpose, it will motivate you to move ahead, no matter how many impediments you have to face.

Align your resolution with a purpose!

2. Be Precise

If you are specific and clear-cut about what you want to achieve, the chances of success are far greater. Keep a record of your progress. For instance, if your resolution is to get a better health, make a daily or a weekly plan of your workouts.

3. Create Your Environment

Environment plays a very important role in your success or failure. Create an environment which makes it difficult NOT to do what you are determined to do. Keep yourself away from people and things that pull you back.

4. Be Focused

The tendency with every one of us is that we start something new with great enthusiasm but when our initial efforts don’t give us the results we give up. What we need to do is to focus on the process and make ourselves more competent. Suppose you want to stay fit – then focus on increasing your time of walking or jogging a little daily.

5.  Forgive Your Failures

What will define your success in the coming year is not your failure but how you responded to that failure. Don’t let your failure pull you back. Learn from them, make changes accordingly and move on.

Even after making full efforts and giving your best your resolutions fail. Do you know why?

Why Resolutions didn’t work in 2015?

New Year Resolutions fail

  • The biggest reason why the resolution fail is that it is not based on what we need to do but on what we think we should do. Most of the times, you make resolutions which are based on other people’s expectations. Forget about what others want from you, think about what you want.
  • Some of the resolutions fail in January itself while others by the mid-year. The reason is that there is lack of commitment. The problem is that you are trying to do something which is not meaningful to you but still you want it to happen. In short your resolution lacks any sort of personal importance. So resolution should be the one that really comes from within you and that which matters a lot.
  • The timing is wrong. After long holidays, you have to again face the harsh realities of life and over that the new burden of resolutions. If you want to do something and make a choice – why wait for a single day? You can do that on any day of the year.

The best way to achieve your resolution in 2016 is to break it down into smaller targets that are clear-cut and calculable.

  • Hi, Sonal

This is the right time of the year to put out the encouragement post in relating to new year resolution.

Most people failed in the new year resolutions. There are so many distractions and obstacles along the path from the starting point to finish line. The one really know what he wants will never find the reasons to quit. They will jump over the barriers or work around the obstacles.

Your lists should be bookmarked for anyone who wants to complete the resolution.

    Nice post! will share!

  • Hi Sonal

I tend not to make New Year Resolutions because, as you say, why wait for one particular day?

That said, I will need to make a bit of an effort with my weight in 2016. Sitting surrounded by chocolates and people eating them isn’t the right environment, so it will have to wait until after the holiday visitors (and their chocolates) have gone!

      Hi Joy

Absolutely, why should we wait for that one day to do what we want. If we are determined to achieve our goals we can start any day of the year.

I too love chocolates alot. And in the festive season there are loads of it around. Need to be careful about how much I eat!

      Thanks for writing in.

      Happy New Year!

  • Hi Sonal,

Happy new year to you! Great work!
As the years go by, many people have been quite pessimistic about achieving new year’s resolutions/goals. And I think they are just missing the right formula.
You’ve pretty much listed down the complete recipe!
If you’ll think about it, the steps are very simple and straight to the point.
You just need to have the right attitude and the positive mindset in order to execute your goals.
And great point raised on the idea of living up to other’s expectations, that is a big NO-NO!
Let’s focus on our REAL goals. Not the goal of satisfying the expectation of other people. We gotta satisfy ourselves first right? 🙂

      Hi Louis

Thanks for visiting my blog and sharing your valuable feedback. am glad that you liked my post.

You are right, it is not difficult to achieve our goals. You just need to be focused. and as I mentioned if you break your goals into smaller goals, it is easier to achieve. Apart from that keep rewarding yourself for a moral boost.

Do what you want to do not what others want.

      Thanks for writing in.

      Happy New Year!

  • Hey Sonal,

Great post, you must be prepared for your New Year Resolution. Oh and as it’s the 1st of January 2016 – Happy New Year.

You have certainly picked a topic that nearly everyone can relate to. The failure of that announcement. I am going to stop…. We say it with conviction, we tell everyone that listens. We prepare. The first week happens our minds clear. Then we start to wain. So I am glad you said stop making half hearted decisions.

None of my resolutions are disappointing because I very rarely stray from what I want these days. 21 days of no sugar. Then a 3 day detox. I will start exercise. But I do heaps of walking so I am only adding 20 minutes extra to my day. And that takes a month to implement because I build myself up. So it does not even feel challenging.

Hope your resolutions aren’t too heavy. Thanks for the reminder of what I should be looking out for. I enjoyed the read.

    Rachel.

      Hi Rachel

Happy New Year to you too. Wish you all the success and happiness in the coming year.

The day we start making whole-hearted decisions, we can achieve what we want. We should set goals for us based on what we want not what others want from us. go by your heart!

Its great that you keep upto your resolutions and achieve them. Exercising is great and I love the idea of adding those extra minutes daily to your walk. This is something I should start doing. Thanks for the inspiration!

      All the best for 20161
