Where does wisdom come from?

Does your heartbeat fluctuation affect your wisdom?

Should I listen to my heart or my mind?

Should I go practically or emotionally?

These questions pop up whenever we need to take a decision.

The long–debated issue is now solved.

Recently, a study was conducted by Canadian and Australian scientists. According to them, it is our heart, in fact, that has a considerable impact on the wisdom of our head.

Hearbeat and wisdom…..seems to be a strange connection?

But its TRUE….there is a connection!

Fluctuations of Heartbeat affect Wisdom

The research team revealed that the rhythm of our heart and our thinking process works hand-in-hand. Wisdom is a matter of both heart and mind. Heart and mind team up and enable a person to make wise decision about difficult problems and social issues.

What is wisdom?

The Wikipedia definition of wisdom says: Wisdom or sapience is the ability to think and act using knowledge, experience, understanding, common sense, and insight.

The findings of the study revealed that people who have greater variations in heart rhythm have more wisdom and make wise judgements.

Dr Igor Grossmann, of the University of Waterloo, in Canada, said: “Our research shows that wise reasoning is not exclusively a function of the mind and cognitive ability.”

“We found that people who have greater heart rate variability and who are able to think about social problems from a distanced viewpoint demonstrate a greater capacity for wise reasoning.”

How was the study conducted?

To find out the connection between the heart and mind, Grossmann and his co-researchers enrolled 150 participants with an average age of 25, from the University of Western Sydney, Australia. These participants took part in a series of social reasoning and attributional judgement tasks. During these tasks, the participants were asked to give their opinion on various social issues about which they felt strongly. They had to give their opinions from both first-person and third-person perspective.

The researchers used an electrocardiogram (ECG) to measure each study subject’s resting heart rates during each task. The collected data was then analyzed and the research team of scientists found out that participants with greater variation in heartbeats were more capable of taking wise decisions in a less biased manner as compared to those with lower heart rate variation.

Dr Grossmann said: “We already knew that people with greater variation in heart rate show superior performance in the brain’s executive functioning such as working memory.

“However, that does not necessarily mean these people are wiser – in fact, some people may use their cognitive skills to make unwise decisions.

“To channel their cognitive abilities for wiser judgment, people with greater heart rate variability first need to overcome their egocentric viewpoints.”

The study was published in the journal Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience.

Role of heart in controlling the mind

It is believed that heart controls the brain more than the brain controlling the heart.

  1. Heart is at times referred to as the ‘little brain’.
  2. Heart communicates to the brain all the messages.
  3. Heart emits more electrical activity than the brain.
  4. Activity in one person’s heart can be measured in the brain waves of another person.
  5. The electrical activity of the heart and the brain can be guided into a synchronous electrical rhythm. It is measured and displayed by focusing on positive and loving emotions coming from the heart.

So your judgement and decisions are not only the result of your mind but the work of both heart and mind!

  • How interesting! I’m not sure I understand the results of the study in terms of what heartbeat showed the best cognitive behaviour, but it is so interesting to know that our heart rate has an impact on our thinking!

    Enjoy the journey!

      Hi Mandy

What basically the study reveals is that the variations of our heartbeat affects our wisdom. It depends on high or low variations. This enables us to make wise judgements.
