Let’s have healthy hair this rainy season!

Vow… nothing can ever beat that but here is the bad news.

Getting wet in the rains is not really good for your hair.

Yes!!!! It’s true!

Rain water is acidic and even dirty. At the same time the increased levels of humidity in monsoon increase your hair woes.

With monsoon kicking in soon, it’s time to show your hair and skin some extra care and love. It is perfectly fine if you forgot to take care of your body for some time. But you dare to forget the whole season?

Monsoon is the season of dry skin and damaged hair with lots of humidity in the air. So your skin and hair needs some extra attention and care in this season. As you can find evident changes in weather, taking alarming steps will decrease your efforts to maintain healthy hair as the season continues.

Most of us think that summer is the time that causes more hair damage. But no rainy season has its own weather-induced disturbance that strip away the outermost layer of the hair strand cuticle making it brittle, rough and prone to dryness.

Tips for Healthy Hair

Beauty expert Shahnaz Husain has doled out tips to maintain hair during monsoons.

  1. During the monsoon season, when the humidity is high, the hair becomes dull and limp. Give your hair a tea-water and lemon rinse after you shampoo. Boil used tea leaves again in enough water. After boiling, you should have about five to six cups of tea-water. Cool and strain it. Add lemon juice and use it as a last rinse after shampoo.
  2. Applying essential oil may help monsoon hair problems, like dandruff. Essential oils should always be mixed with oil, rose water, or mineral water. Add five drops of Tea Tree Oil to 100 ml water. Shake well and keep in an airtight bottle. Apply this on the scalp, after shampoo and leave on.

  3. Shampoo the hair more frequently during the rains. Use less shampoo and rinse well with water. To add shine, whisk egg white with the juice of a lemon and apply on the hair half an hour before your shampoo.
  4. Another problem is that of bad odour from the scalp during the humid season. Wash your hair at least four times a week. Rinse thoroughly with water. For a fragrant hair rinse, add the juice of a lemon and half a cup of rose water to a mug of water and use as a last rinse after washing the hair.
  5. For dandruff that adheres to the scalp, have warm oil treatment. Heat olive oil and apply on the scalp with cotton wool, rubbing gently to dislodge the flakes. Leave on overnight. Next morning, apply the juice of a lemon or apple cider vinegar on the scalp and wash the hair after 15 minutes.
  6. Mix gram flour (besan) with ripe papaya pulp and lemon juice into a paste. Apply the pack on the hair and wash it off after half an hour. This is a cleansing pack and also adds body to the hair.

  1. Try to protect your hair from rains, but that’s something impossible as we get caught in rains at least once in a while.
  2. As you reach home wash your hair with mild shampoos and let it dry.
  3. Apply shampoos in a gentle manner and don’t forget to use a conditioner in the rainy season after every wash.
  4. At night, massage your hair with warm coconut oil and comb the properly for the even distribution of oil on your scalp and hair.
  5. To keep your hair thick and black, apply warm oil mixed with curry leaves.
  6. Usually in this season you invite itchy scalp due to dandruff or some other reasons. For such irritating scalp apply neem oil.
  7. Use herbal products to maintain the natural glossy look of the hair.
  8. Hair coloring is not a good idea in this season as it takes very long to wash your hair and dry. Keep it as natural as possible.
  9. Beer is a good conditioner and adds glow to them. Wash your hair with beer and after few minutes wash it off with cold water.
  10. Limit the use of hair dryers.
  11. Avoid Hair styling. Tying up your hair leads to trapping of rain water in them and the humidity makes the hair even more frizzy and limp. Keep them loose. Nothing can beat the natural beauty.

Following these tips for your hair would definitely help you to gear up your monsoon blues and have healthy hair. Get ready to glow this monsoon!

  • I wish I had know about some of these tips years ago Sonal. My first husband and I went to Malindi, Kenya for our honeymoon and the monsoons came early. I have curly hair and it goes really frizzy in damp or humid weather. I can’t tell you what a problem I had with it. I like the idea of the tea-water and lemon rinse. I think I will give it a try monsoon or no monsoon.
