“I don’t have time to go to the gym”

“I don’t like to exercise”

These are the two excuses we often hear from people who think that workouts are boring and keeping fit is a big TASK.

The first excuse, I have already destroyed in my earlier post, Stay Fit Without Gym.

Now let’s try to do away with the second most common excuse.

Firstly you need to understand that there is no exercise that can outdo your diet full of junk food and calories.

We human beings are incredible in justifying even the most unreasonable things.  We are so good at giving a logical explanation to our ridiculous behavior, and then saying things like “well, I already ate a lot today, so the day is already ruined.  I’ll start exercising from tomorrow.” So in order to live a healthy life, we need to understand certain key things:

  • Burning 400 calories by exercising and then stuffing 1000 calories is a lost battle.
  • Exercise is not running on a treadmill for hours and then being miserable.
  • Your diet is the major factor in staying healthy.
  • Every decision you make has an impact which can take you a step towards your goal or away from your goal.
You have the ability to make right decisions and change your lifestyle into a healthy one. Click To Tweet

To have a healthy lifestyle you don’t need to hit the gym, neither do you need to change your schedule for exercising.

Exercise without Exercising

When you say “I don’t like to exercise”, it means that you don’t like a particular kind of exercise. If you don’t like to go to the gym, don’t go. If you don’t like running, don’t. What if I tell you that there are ways to workout without even realizing it is one?

Don’t believe it? There are actually ways to make it happen. Take a quick glance at this list that gives you an exercise without realizing it and commit to trying these.

1. Walking

Do you know that walking is as good as running? Go for a 15 minute brisk walk daily. Have a meeting at work? Why not walk and go. Steve Job was famous for this. Infact you can integrate walking at any time of the day.

2. Rock Climbing

If you want to stay active, rock climbing is the best exercise for you. It is the best workout for your upper body that will give you toned arms and shoulders. There is nothing better than this if you commit yourself for climbing regularly. Go out with friends and challenge each other – to get fitter.

3. Dancing

Who says exercising is not fun? Go dancing! You will burn a lot of calories and it won’t be like an exercise. There are different types of dances to suit your taste and style – go for a hip hop or zumba, salsa or street dance. No matter what your age is, you can choose a style you enjoy and elevate your heart rate.

4. Roughhousing with kids

Start playing with your kids. If you are still single, pay a visit to your nephew and niece regularly. Give your sister some relief and handle the kids. This will definitely earn you a reward as you will burn calories running after them and playing games with them. A great exercise, right?

5. Martial Arts

Martial arts exercise

Want to try Kung Fu or Tae Kwon Do? There are all types of martial arts to try out – whether you want to try fast-paced moves or a relaxed form. It will make you feel strong and empowered. At the same time you get a great workout session.

6. Create a standing desk

Do you know that there is a big connection between sitting all day and an early grave? A standing desk will help you prevent back pain and also reduce your chances of developing a bad posture. So try and be productive with a standing desk. (According to a study people who are sitting for almost the entire day have 54% more chances to die of heart stroke.)

7. Stop meeting for coffee

Its fun to meet your friends out for a coffee. But you can take an active approach. Why not meet up for a game of Frisbee or golf? You can even enjoy a walk together. This will keep you more fit and active and at the same time change the way you look at exercise. It will gradually become an excuse to catch up with friends.

8. Time to go between the sheets

It is self-explanatory I guess. Sex not only makes you feel good and intimate but also burns calories. It burns approximately five calories in a minute, increases your heart rate and keeps all your muscles involved. It also keeps you flexible and balanced. It is the ultimate exercise!

9. Clean the house

Do you like cleaning? Guess it’s not in anyone’s list of things to do. But do you know how good an exercise it can be if you clean the whole house? Play on your favorite songs and start cleaning. Vacuuming and scrubbing will accelerate your heartbeat and you will burn a good sum of calories. So if you are avoiding housework, it’s time to rethink!

An average person burns 4 calories per minute in cleaning. This means 80 calories for 20 minutes.

Assume that you spend an hour in cleaning every week; you get a total of 12,480 calories a year! That is you lose 3.5 pounds in a year just by cleaning!

So you not only burn calories but also enjoy a spotless house!

What if you struggle to work a little harder? Try washing your car.

10. Wash your car

If you wash your car for a year, you burn as much calories as contained in 15 chocolates! A person burns 6 calories per minute while washing his car. Suppose you spend 30 minutes in a week to keep your car clean, you will burn 180 calories. This amounts to 9,360 calories in a year, which is equal to 2.7 pounds a year. Isn’t it a great exercise!

11. Jump on a trampoline

This is a fun-filled activity which can be one of the best exercises. Jumping on a trampoline like a child can help you burn 42 calories in just 10 minutes. It will tone your body and also build your strength.

So if you think your workout strategy needs a little crisping, add one of these exercises into your plan. It will definitely give you the desired results. What is your favorite exercise to get in shape? Do share your comments!

you are right ,it does not really a gym to do exercise
I did never go to a Gym like we see today ,it can be done
at home as well, only if more people exercising together
it needs a room and can be more fun. Walking is one of the
best exercises ,it is free and if done in a peaceful environment
it can be a kind of meditation, Dancing is very good as well
and it is fun .Why going to a Gym if we can do this ?
    Thank you for your suggestions.

  • This article is great for me right now. I am counting calories (never done that before) and it has taught me so much about foods and diet. I hate the gym! Yes, I don’t go, but I do walk a lot (I’m an alapaca trekker) and I do stand a lot in my other work, but a standing desk is a great idea too!

    Enjoy the journey!

  • Hi Sonai,

Some great ideas here. I must say that personally, I enjoy the sense of having to go to the gym because it is a commitment and I have paid for it! When doing fun activities at home like gardening, I keep putting them off – story of my life!

      Hi Robert

Thanks for writing in. Its great if you enjoy the gym and committed to it. But there are people who hate going to the gym. So they can enjoy exercise at home in these wonderful ways!

      Hope to see you again.

      Have a nice day!

  • I’ve always been consoling myself that cleaning the house is an alternative to exercising. Thanks for confirming that! 🙂

      Hi

You were absolutely right in thinking that. It is a great exercise.

      Thanks for writing in.

  • Hi Sonal,

This is a very important message you’re helping to spread. I’ve tried the gym route too but found it too disruptive to my day. I particularly support the messages that “you can’t outrun a bad diet” and the harmful effects of sitting.

In the past few months, I’ve been using an activity tracker which not only counts my steps (average around 8000 a day) but acts as a reminder to keep moving.

I think if readers followed some of your recommendations they’ll start to see (and feel) real improvements. I’d also recommend intermittent fasting for one or two days a week or taking a walk at lunchtime instead of eating something. Very powerful if combined with moving more.

All these things add up to a lifestyle improvement.

    Best wishes.

      Hi Alan

Loved to read your feedback. Glad that you liked the post. Gym is really too time consuming. When you can stay fit at home why go to a gym. These activities are real fun and will help you stay fit.

      8000 steps….Vow thats really cool!

Yes fasting once a week is really good for the body. A healthy lifestyle keeps a person fit.

  • Hi Sonal,

I joined a gymn and hated every minute of it, so these ideas are very welcome.

I have a standing desk and enjoy using it, dancing I already enjoy. Not so the housework, and I’m not tempted by rock climbing either.

But – hey you unearthed my secret desire…. to go trampolining 🙂 Sadly I suspect the time when that may be possible is past. (I suppose I could buy my granddaughters a trampoline for their birthday – hmm, tempting!)

Off to look at Amazon (only kidding),
