Christmas is a prominent time to pamper yourself and indulge in delicious festive meals. But don’t let this be the signal to stuff yourself!

Living in India, Christmas may not be our traditional festival but it is celebrated with a lot of gung-ho. There are cakes, chocolates, cookies and no doubt alcohol. It is the time of year where we all eat out a lot – the spirit of festive season. On Christmas and New Year we all indulge in lot of fatty foods and alcohol. But this does not give you an excuse to put up weight. Don’t let your waistline compete with Santa!

At the same time, don’t put a break on your celebrations. You can enjoy the festivities without much impact on your health. Here are some amazing tips that will not let you fall into the trap of overindulgence.

Don’t sit idle all day

The biggest mistake that many people make is that as the holiday season starts, their exercising stops!  People at times come up with the excuse that the gyms are closed. Well there are many other ways to keep yourself active. You can go walking or running or try some simple exercises at home.

As you are going to have an extensive dinner on Christmas, prepare yourself for that in the day. Indulge yourself in some sport. Don’t plonk yourself on the bed. Keeping yourself active throughout the day will lead to increase in energy expenditure.

Eat fruits and veggies

What most of us tend to forget in the festive season is eating fruits. It is nowhere on our Christmas menu. But it is the time when our body needs vitamins more than any other time. Late night parties and celebrations have a great impact on our health and to avoid such a situation you need to keep fruits in your list when you go for Christmas shopping. Make sure to fill your fruit bowl!

On the day of the copious meal, try to eat lots of veggies in the afternoon. It will balance the high-protein meal in the evening.

Don’t overeat throughout December

Don't overeat Christmas

It’s not only the Christmas dinner that makes you put on weight but the whole season of overindulgence in high calorie food that affects your health. Events before and after Christmas and food bargains that take place in supermarkets result in hundreds of extra calories intake in a day. It leads to almost 3kg of weight gain in a month. So keep a watch over how much you eat so that you don’t have to torture yourself with a drastic diet the next month!

Choose wisely & do some smart swaps

You just need to make small changes to have a delicious yet healthy Christmas meal. Go for baked potatoes instead of roasting them; try using yogurt instead of cream in your pudding. Turkey is no doubt a healthy choice and if you go only for breast, its low fat also. By some clever swaps you can save many calories!

Don’t drink too much

Don’t drink too much Christmas

It is impossible to imagine a party without booze. No doubt it’s a festive season and we don’t want to act like a grumpy grandma but alcohol can be harmful for you. It is not only high in calories but also affects your senses and you lose control over what you eat, thus adding those extra pounds. So keep your alcohol consumption in control. A simple way to control is to have a glass of water for every glass of alcohol you drink.

You can mount up your alcohol units even if you are at home. Wine on the Christmas eve, Fizz in the breakfast and then again wine at the dinner…and so it goes on. Keep a record of your drinks and try to balance your hard drinks with the soft ones.

Avoid a Christmas stuffing

You may be surprised to know but the research says that a person on an average consumes 3,000 calories on the Christmas dinner. You have to learn to say no. Don’t eat everything that is offered to you at the party. You work so hard throughout the year to keep yourself fit, but this one party can spoil everything. To avoid such a situation, eat some healthy snacks before going to the party so that you don’t feel hungry for a longer time and don’t gorge onto the food. Think and eat rather than mindlessly popping!

Prevention is better than cure. So a little watchfulness and common sense will prevent you from putting on those extra kilos this holiday season and you won’t have to make a New Year resolution to lose weight.

Have a happy and a healthy Christmas and New Year!

  • Hi Sonal,
a good reminder to take care of our health in this time.
You are right it is good to eat lots of fruits and vegetables,
I always make a big bowl of green salad at the begin of a meal,
this makes satisfied. Exercise can be done at home as well if
a gym is closed and a good walk is good as well.
Thank you for the great information to keep us healthy .
