Father’s Day is right around the corner — it’s close enough that you should start thinking about how to surprise him. Father’s Day falls on Sunday, June 18th this year and we’re here to help you find the perfect gift. Before we tell you some amazing Father’s Day Gift Ideas, let’s see why and how the day is celebrated.

Father’s Day is celebrated all over the world to recognize the contribution that fathers make to the lives of their children. The Day celebrates fatherhood and male parenting. Although it is celebrated on different dates worldwide, many countries observe this day on the third Sunday of June.

Why do we celebrate Father’s Day?

The idea first originated in the USA in 1966 and since then it is celebrated there on the third Sunday of June.

Though the precise origins Father’s Day are uncertain, it is believed that there was a movement around 100 years ago for a day which celebrated fatherhood.

It is considered that Sonora Dodd of Washington, came up with the idea after hearing about the Mother’s Day sermon in 1910. Dodd thought that  fathers too should have their own day. Dodd and her siblings were raised by their father as a single parent after the death of their mother in childbirth.

With the local YMCA and the Ministerial Association of Spokane, a city near where she was born, Dodd began a campaign to have the day officially recognized. The first Father’s Day was held in Spokane in 1910.

Another theory suggests that it is Grace Golden Clayton, from Fairmont, West Virginia, who should be credited with the idea of Father’s Day, after she suggested a day celebrating fatherhood in 1908. She put forward the idea after hearing about a mine explosion in a nearby town. In this explosion 360 men were killed. She argued that children in the town needed a time to remember their fathers.

Now, whatever be the cause, the day exists to remind all of us that dads are great!

When is Father’s Day celebrated?

The date when Father’s Day is celebrated varies from country to country. It is celebrated in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States on the third Sunday of June. It is also observed on the same day in countries such as Argentina, Canada, France, Greece, India, Ireland, Mexico, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, and Venezuela. In Australia and New Zealand Father’s Day is on the first Sunday in September. In Thailand it is celebrated on December 5, which is the birthday of the country’s king. Brazilian dads are honored on the second Sunday of August.

In Germany it is called Vatertag (Father’s Day) but is also sometimes known as Männertag (or men’s day).

In China, Father’s Day used to be celebrated on 8th  August as the Chinese for eight is “ba”, while a colloquial word for father is “ba-ba” – so the eighth day of the eighth month sounds similar to “daddy”. But the day was later moved to the third Sunday of June, in line with the UK and US.

“Any man can be a father but it takes someone special to be a dad.”- Anne Geddes

He used to buy everything I ever asked for. Instead of spending his weekends relaxing, he played games with me and my brother, took us to amusement parks and how could I forget, shopping!  Even after growing up the only man I trusted blindly was my dad! He always fulfilled my little demands and was never a miser in spending his precious time with me. Now when he is no longer with me, I miss him a lot.
