All of us start our mornings with a hot cup of coffee or tea to warm ourselves and wake up. Some of you may also prefer a glass of cold water to replenish you in the morning. They have now become our morning habits. Nevertheless, it’s time to think again on how you start your morning because research shows that drinking warm water on an empty stomach gives you many health benefits.
Stella Metsovas, clinical nutritionist and media health expert in Food and Nutrition Sciences, says, “Physicians recommend drinking warm water in the morning, usually, with a polyphenol-rich lemon immersion, or with a tea shown to decrease free radical activity in the body.” Drinking warm water increases the tightening of the intestines, and also helps with digestion and regulates bowel movements.
So what are the benefits of drinking warm water?
Health Benefits of drinking warm water
Here are 11 positive things that will happen to your body when you start drinking warm water in the morning.
1. Prevents premature aging
Premature aging is the most terrible nightmare, but fortunately, this can be barred by drinking warm water. The presence of toxins in the body makes aging faster. But drinking warm water can help cleanse the body from toxins. At the same time, it repairs skin cells which lead to an increase in the elasticity of your skin. To get the health benefits of warm water, drink it every morning plain or with a lemon.
2. Alleviates pain
Warm water is regarded as the nature’s most powerful home remedy. It can help lighten pain from menstruation to headaches. The heat of the warm water has a calming and soothing effect on the abdominal muscles. This provides immediate relief for cramps and muscle spasms.
3. Helps in weight loss
If you are trying to lose weight then you must have definitely heard that drinking warm water in the morning can help you shed those extra pounds. This is absolutely correct. Warm water increases your body temperature, which; in turn, increases your metabolic rate. An increase in metabolic activity enables the body to burn more calories throughout the day.
If your day begins with a glass of warm water with lemon, your body breaks down the adipose tissue (or body fat). Drinking warm water with lemon also controls food craving because lemon contains pectin fiber. Mestovas told Medical Daily, “Physicians recommend drinking warm water in the morning, usually, with a polyphenol-rich lemon immersion, or with a tea shown to decrease free radical activity in the body.”

4. Improves digestion
Drinking a glass of warm water in the morning stimulate your digestive system by breaking down the food faster and flush out the toxins. On the other hand, drinking cold water after meals is counterproductive. Cold water solidifies the oils and fats in the food you have just consumed. This creates fat deposits in the intestine and makes digestion more difficult. So it’s better to replace a glass of cold water with a warm one.
5. Improves blood circulation
A glass of warm water eliminates all the accumulated deposits in the nervous system and fat deposits in the body. This in turn flushes out the toxins circulating throughout the body, and thus enhances blood circulation. Warm water is also relaxing, and helps loosen the muscles, eliminating poor circulation, and supporting blood flow.
6. Aids constipation
Another health benefit of drinking warm water is that it aids constipation. At one point or another, all of you must have faced this common stomach problem where there is little to no bowel movement leading to constipation. Drinking warm water in the morning on an empty stomach can help improve bowel movements and aid constipation.
7. Induces sleep
Sipping warm water during meals, particularly during dinner and before going to bed, helps relax your body and soothes your nerves. This in turn, induces sleep. It will also help in stopping midnight cravings and lead to a feeling of rejuvenation in the morning.
8. Assists with nasal and throat congestion
Yet another health benefit of warm water is that it is a brilliant natural remedy for colds, coughs and a sore throat. It dissolves phlegm and also helps to remove it from your respiratory tract. It also gives relief from a sore throat and nasal congestion.
9. Helps in body detoxification
Warm water is extraordinary for helping your body to detox. When you drink warm water your body temperature rises which results in sweating. You want this to happen because it helps to release toxins from your body and cleanse it properly.

The benefits for your skin just keep on coming. Warm water deep cleanses your body and eliminates the root causes of acne-related infections.
11. Maintains hair health and vitality
Drinking warm water is also good if you want to have soft and shiny hair. It energizes the nerve endings in your hair roots and makes them active. This is helpful for getting back the natural liveliness of your hair and keeping it healthy. At the same time it also accelerates the growth of your hair and keeps your scalp hydrated and prevents dandruff.

Sonal, I’ve been drinking warm water in the mornings for years because cold or icy water just seems to paralyze my stomach and I feel it just sits there. I don’t notice that it raises my temperature though and I certainly don’t sweat.
Drinking warm water with lemon, especially if you include some of the rind, in the mornings is good for detoxifying the liver because it contains D-Limonene which induces the liver detox enzymes.
Hi Sandy
Drinking warm water in the morning with some lemon juice helps you lose weight. Infact it can do wonders. As you said it is also good for detoxification. Apart from that it also gives a beautiful and clear skin.

Hi Sonal,
Love your blog posts! This one included.
As a kid, I remember thinking my Mom’s Mom was odd when she used to start her day with a cuppa warm water. But then, she was a stoic, prim lady who scared me with her strict lifestyle and controlled demeanor.
She, Miss Cora to us grandkids – because she frowned upon sentimental names such as Granny, etc., was a true beauty who lived (in good health) well into her 90’s.
Thanks for making me think of her. Hadn’t in many years…

I tried it once from what I could recall, didn’t like the taste of it warm so never followed up on it. But now that you have informed and created such an awareness, I mean why not? It does more good than harm. I should try drinking the water by adding some lemon.
Thank you for sharing this post. I am more educated and informed as a result of it. Have a great week.
